Before Ronner-Knip, animal painting was dominated by horses, dogs, and livestock. Cats weren’t considered particularly noble subjects. She changed that. In the mid-1800s she started painting cats in cozy domestic scenes – kittens tangled in yarn, lounging on velvet chairs, climbing over furniture. Victorians absolutely loved it. Her work helped turn cats into fashionable household companions rather than just mousers. In this piece a tired mother cat rests with her sleepy kittens, the peaceful aftermath of a very busy day.
✷ HANDCRAFTED DETAILS
Every part of this is intentional. The canvas is archival, the frame is a plaster relief cast from a mold created from a rare antique original, and the whole thing is made by hand. It has that quiet, slightly mysterious quality of something that feels older than it technically is.

• Plaster relief frame, hand-poured and finished in a vintage patina. Cast from a rare antique original and unique to this studio.
• Made with Hydrostone plaster, a mineral-based material rather than petroleum-based resin. It’s biodegradable and doesn’t stick around like plastic.
• Two finishes available:
Aged gold with a real metal finish applied in the mold for a warm, heirloom feel. Finished with hand-buffed antique wax for a museum-quality low luster.
Classic black with pigment mixed directly into the plaster for a deep, matte look that won’t chip or flake.
• At 1.8 lbs, it has a satisfying bit of weight to it and feels solid rather than delicate, with pre-installed hanging hardware so it’s easy to hang.
