✷ ARTWORK

The Wave by Gustave Courbet c.1869
Courbet was the loud, stubborn rebel of 19th-century French painting. While everyone else was idealizing nymphs and pretending reality was polite, he said, “Nope,” and painted the world as it actually looked and behaved. Mud, stone, laborers, storms, chaos. He basically invented Realism as an intentional middle finger to fantasy. Courbet painted a whole series of wave paintings in the late 1860s using the coast of Normandy as his testing ground for controlled chaos. These were not polite seascapes with boats and sunsets. He treated waves like portraits, each with its own mood and violence level. This one feels like it might knock over your other art just to prove a point.

✷ HANDCRAFTED DETAILS

If you’re expecting something lightweight and forgettable, this will probably surprise you. The canvas is archival, the frame is a plaster relief cast from a mold made from a rare antique frame, and everything is put together by hand. It has a way of settling into a room like it’s been there for years.

• Archival canvas print with satin varnish (museum-quality, fade-resistant).
• Plaster relief frame, hand-poured and finished in a vintage patina. Cast from a rare antique original and unique to this studio.
• Made with Hydrostone plaster, a mineral-based material rather than petroleum-based resin. It’s biodegradable and doesn’t stick around like plastic.
• Two finishes available:
Aged gold with a real metal finish applied in the mold for a warm, heirloom feel. Finished with hand-buffed antique wax for a museum-quality low luster.
Classic black with pigment mixed directly into the plaster for a deep, matte look that won’t chip or flake.
• At 1.8 lbs, it has a satisfying bit of weight to it and feels solid rather than delicate, with pre-installed hanging hardware so it’s easy to hang.
