This portrait could be seen as a little dark, but honestly, I think she is kind of cute. She has snakes for hair. So what? Is that a deal breaker? We've all got our little idiosyncrasies. This striking portrait is titled A Gorgon’s Head but that seems a little harsh. Look closer and you’ll see she’s not exactly here to turn you to stone - though she could, and you’d probably deserve it.
Trübner, a German realist who usually painted horses and serious men with side parts, took a sharp left turn into mythology here and we’re glad he did. The result feels more like a modern icon than a monster: sharp, stylish, and seductive. Just don’t touch her hair. Or make eye contact. This one is for those who like their art old, a little ominous, and kind of flirty.
