This one’s unusual for Shannon - not a society portrait or a romanticized allegory, but a quiet little window into his actual home life. That’s his daughter Kitty (in profile), reading with a friend, in what was probably the quietest corner of their drawing room. And in the back, his wife Florence is doing something mysterious with a vase of flowers, as one does. This is the kind of domestic scene you don’t usually get from a painter like Shannon - who, let’s not forget, had a Holland Park address and a two-door setup: one for the studio, one for the family. This is from behind the second door.
