Chinese Lanterns by Ivan Semyonovich Kulikov (c.1910) is a an ode to the lost art of the dramatically lit backyard gathering. Before Bluetooth speakers and bug zappers, there were paper lanterns, embroidered dresses, and (apparently) small children in elephant masks. The painting is peak summer nostalgia, with just enough strange to make it interesting. Kulikov had a knack for capturing real people in real moments, and here they are: loitering stylishly, lit like a stage set, frozen mid-party forever.
This miniature oil painting reproduction is printed on archival canvas and paired with a handcrafted frame made using a mold from a 19th-century antique.
